The Global Society for Neuroscience and Mental Health (GSNMH) endeavors to unite healthcare workers across the globe to bring positive change around mental health issues and neurological disorders. Here at GSNMH, we aim to raise awareness, reduce the stigma, and improve the quality of care for people suffering from mental and neurological conditions. We focus on writing, art, research, and social media platforms to achieve these goals.
According to the Lancet Neurology paper, in the past thirty years, the number of deaths and disabilities due to neurological disorders has risen considerably, making neurological disorders a leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death globally. Low- and middle-income countries are significantly affected. Stigma and discrimination in people suffering from these issues are high. Therefore, urgent measures to reduce the global burden and increase awareness to help combat the stigma is a need of the hour.
WHO reports state that, over the past ten years, there has been a 13% increase in mental health and substance use disorders up until 2017. Suicide is the fourth most common cause of death for people aged 15 to 29. Depression is one of the leading causes of disability. Preventable physical diseases cause people with severe mental health conditions to die early—up to two decades earlier. Annually, anxiety and depression cost the world economy 1 trillion dollars. People who suffer from mental illnesses face stigma, discrimination, and grave violations of their human rights frequently. As mental health affects person’s all aspects of life, there is an urgent need to address these issues.
